Fall from Space: An open world action RPG built for Chromatic, with original box art painted by Mitsuhiro Arita

You wake up on a planet you do not recognize, with no memory of how you got there. That is everything Fall from Space hands you at the start. Where you go next, who you help, and who you leave behind is entirely up to you.

A Solar System Inside A Cartridge

This is an open world, non-linear RPG on a Game Boy cartridge, which should not really work and does. You travel between multiple worlds, and each one is packed with side quests, encounters, upgrades, and things nobody told you were there. The exploration borrows from Metroidvania platforming, so the places you cannot reach on your first pass become the reason you come back later with better gear.

A full run takes somewhere between seven and ten hours. Most players will want more than one.

Your Choices Actually Matter

The story branches, and it branches in ways that hold. There are multiple endings, secret endings, and a karma system that quietly changes how the solar system treats you based on what you have been doing out there. Quests resolve differently depending on the calls you make, and the characters remember them.

That is a heavy design that asks for 8 bit hardware, and it is the reason this one is worth your time even if you have played every RPG on the platform.

Built By One Person In Manchester

Fall from Space was made solo by Joel Jarman, a UK based developer and pixel artist who founded Joel J Games in 2021 to build brand new games for retro consoles. He wrote it for real hardware, so it runs on Game Boy Color, GBA and SP, the ModRetro Chromatic, and Analogue Pocket.

The box art was painted by illustrator Mitsuhiro Arita. Mitsuhiro is a renowned illustrator and art director best known for his work on the Pokemon Trading Card Game. Involved with TGC since its earliest days in 1996, Arita has illustrated more than 600 Pokemon cards, including the iconic Charizard from the original base set. The original soundtrack is by Beatscribe. And because this is a game made by somebody who clearly loves the platform, it supports saves anywhere, has multiple save slots, unlockables, and the Game Boy Printer.
