How It Started

It started as an idea to build a playable portfolio for my personal website – and that’s when I discovered GB Studio. From there, I was hooked.

Other Games / Projects

Self Simulated is my first “real” video game. Since then, I’ve started work on Fuse Dash, an arcade-style action platformer for the Game Boy Color that’s still in development. I’ve also helped with level design and QA testing for other indie devs' projects along the way.

Fun Fact

Self Simulated was made while camping across Europe – Italy, Norway, Denmark, England, Scotland, and the Netherlands. I worked entirely on my laptop while on the road. Oh, and my wife designed two of the levels!

The Idea

Why I Made This Game

Making a video game has always been a dream of mine. After watching Game Maker’s Toolkit’s video “Why Does Celeste Feel So Good to Play?”, I wanted to try building a platformer that felt just as smooth and satisfying – on the Game Boy Color, no less.

What Makes This Game Special

Just the fact that it exists! When I look back at the time, effort, and learning that went into Self Simulated, it honestly feels like a miracle. Like – I made a video game! That’s freaking awesome.

You'll Love This If...

You enjoy tight, responsive platformers – especially if you like mastering precise controls.

Inspiration / Influences

My aim was to create something that feels like a mix between Celeste and Katana Zero – but on the GBC.

Favorite Feature

Definitely the assist settings. They let players tweak the game’s difficulty to match their play style, which makes it more accessible without compromising the core experience.

    Insanely Fun And Addictive

This platformer is a blast to play. The incredibly well done and layered movement mechanics are only matched by the incredibly responsive controls to execute them. I’m certain a younger me would have more easily breezed through some of these levels. The music and sound effects are amazing, making this the perfect blend of retro gaming with modern day mechanics. Cannot wait to see what else this developer has in the works. This is must-buy and will challenge your micro and button combos to the max. Ledge roll, jump, jump, dash, jump, drop smash, jump, dash, exit.

    Definition of "short and sweet"

Apparently, I beat this game in a bit under an hour, but it was really enjoyable. If you play it again with some of the cheats enabled, then it becomes therapeutic. It's pretty good.

Love the style and premise. This game requires you to think outside the box and possess the hand dexterity and coordination of a seasoned gamer. This is another one I can’t seem to put down.
