How It Started
It started as an idea to build a playable portfolio for my personal website – and that’s when I discovered GB Studio. From there, I was hooked.
Other Games / Projects
Self Simulated is my first “real” video game. Since then, I’ve started work on Fuse Dash, an arcade-style action platformer for the Game Boy Color that’s still in development. I’ve also helped with level design and QA testing for other indie devs' projects along the way.
Fun Fact
Self Simulated was made while camping across Europe – Italy, Norway, Denmark, England, Scotland, and the Netherlands. I worked entirely on my laptop while on the road. Oh, and my wife designed two of the levels!
The Idea
Why I Made This Game
Making a video game has always been a dream of mine. After watching Game Maker’s Toolkit’s video “Why Does Celeste Feel So Good to Play?”, I wanted to try building a platformer that felt just as smooth and satisfying – on the Game Boy Color, no less.
What Makes This Game Special
Just the fact that it exists! When I look back at the time, effort, and learning that went into Self Simulated, it honestly feels like a miracle. Like – I made a video game! That’s freaking awesome.
You'll Love This If...
You enjoy tight, responsive platformers – especially if you like mastering precise controls.
Inspiration / Influences
My aim was to create something that feels like a mix between Celeste and Katana Zero – but on the GBC.
Favorite Feature
Definitely the assist settings. They let players tweak the game’s difficulty to match their play style, which makes it more accessible without compromising the core experience.

A fast, retro-style platformer that feels great to play. The controls are smooth, and things get tricky in a fun way. Music loops a bit much, but overall it’s a tight little game.

I picked up Self Simulated from ModRetro after seeing it featured online, and it completely exceeded my expectations. The concept, visuals, and soundtrack pull you right in—it feels like a nostalgic trip mixed with something entirely new. The gameplay is smooth and creative, and it’s awesome to see how well it runs on the Chromatic. You can tell a lot of passion went into making this game.
Between the unique style, atmosphere, and replay value, Self Simulated is easily one of my favorite modern retro titles. It’s clear ModRetro really knows how to bring that authentic Game Boy vibe into something fresh and exciting. Highly recommend it to anyone who loves experimental or story-driven retro games.
