How It Started
It started as an idea to build a playable portfolio for my personal website – and that’s when I discovered GB Studio. From there, I was hooked.
Other Games / Projects
Self Simulated is my first “real” video game. Since then, I’ve started work on Fuse Dash, an arcade-style action platformer for the Game Boy Color that’s still in development. I’ve also helped with level design and QA testing for other indie devs' projects along the way.
Fun Fact
Self Simulated was made while camping across Europe – Italy, Norway, Denmark, England, Scotland, and the Netherlands. I worked entirely on my laptop while on the road. Oh, and my wife designed two of the levels!
The Idea
Why I Made This Game
Making a video game has always been a dream of mine. After watching Game Maker’s Toolkit’s video “Why Does Celeste Feel So Good to Play?”, I wanted to try building a platformer that felt just as smooth and satisfying – on the Game Boy Color, no less.
What Makes This Game Special
Just the fact that it exists! When I look back at the time, effort, and learning that went into Self Simulated, it honestly feels like a miracle. Like – I made a video game! That’s freaking awesome.
You'll Love This If...
You enjoy tight, responsive platformers – especially if you like mastering precise controls.
Inspiration / Influences
My aim was to create something that feels like a mix between Celeste and Katana Zero – but on the GBC.
Favorite Feature
Definitely the assist settings. They let players tweak the game’s difficulty to match their play style, which makes it more accessible without compromising the core experience.

Solid gameplay with perfect control and top quality design. I need more of this in my Chromatic!! Playing non-stop at first sight, if you like this genre you need this game. A must in every new retro collection. 5stars for me!

This game is just amazing both gameplay wise and technically for GB hardware. The action is and controls are very quick and responsive, and when you die in a level it puts your right back into the level nearly instantaneously. There are many secrets including the Konami code and available menu cheats to scale the difficulty. There is an interesting story going on but I haven't beat it yet, but otherwise enjoying this a lot.

Comes with a speed run mode and can be very fast paced. Quick thinking and and a grasp of tight platforming is not a must but helps with progressing easier.

This might be one of the best ModRetro original game I have played so far. As a precision platformer, the control is tight. The short animations reveals the story bit by bit, so as far as the story suspense goes, I think it does a great job. Of course, it is precision platformer, so story is a bonus. I like how the dev included achievements, different modes, difficulty mods, etc. He incorporated a lot of quality of life in modern gaming into a Gameboy game. The experience here is a great one.
