    Like the Game Boy Color Never Left!

    The Chromatic feels like the Game Boy Color I grew up with, thoughtfully refined for today. The display is beautiful, the speaker delivers rich, clear audio, and the controls feel fantastic. Even with larger hands, it's comfortable to hold during long play sessions, and the added weight gives it the feel of a premium device rather than a toy. It's the kind of handheld you can confidently throw in a bag and take anywhere. Whether you're revisiting childhood favorites or discovering the many modern Game Boy releases of today, the Chromatic makes it feel like the Game Boy Color never left.

    Peak GameBoy

    If you're looking for the most premium and luxury way to play Game Boy and Game Boy Color games in 2026, the Chromatic has to be the top choice. This product is aimed narrowly at making the best Game Boy/Game Boy Color experience possible -- and it succeeds in that goal. If you're looking for a more generalist portable emulator with support for additional game systems, you're going to want to look elsewhere.

    The metal casing, sapphire screen (optional), and overall build quality feels fantastic. The buttons are satisfying, but mod-able if you want something different. The Chromatic reminds me of that original Game Boy that was burned, but still playable from the Gulf War that is on display at the Nintendo store in NYC. If the original Game Boy can survive that, the Chromatic feels like it can survive the apocalypse.

    Unlike a lot of modern gaming where you have to install, wait for updates, sign in, agree to TOS, etc. just to get started, the Chromatic reminds you of how easy it used to be to just pop in a cartridge and start playing. Having Tetris bundled in was a great choice, but it also handles old Game Boy/Game Boy Color games, new ModRetro ones, and an EverDrive just fine.

    I like the ability to support both traditional AA batteries and ModRetro's proprietary rechargeable li-ion power core. However, for $200-$300, I would expect to see the power core bundled in as well considering that will be the most convenient way to play for most people.
