How It Started

I’ve been interested in game development since I was young, but it was during the COVID pandemic – when I had more free time – that I really dove in. I decided to learn how to make Game Boy games and ended up self-publishing an adventure RPG called Dragonborne.

Other Games / Projects

Dragonborne, Dracula: Dark Reign, and more titles currently in the works!

Fun Fact

When I made Dragonborne, I was completely new to GB Studio – and honestly, I didn’t use any design or planning docs. I just scripted straight from my head into the engine. Whatever I thought of next made it into the game! That spontaneous process helped shape the foundation for what eventually became Dragonyhm. These days, things are much more structured – we now use detailed design docs and thorough planning for all current and future releases.

The Idea

Why I Made This Game

Dragonyhm is the game I always wanted Dragonborne to be. With more experience, better tools, and the amazing talent of Bumbiss on board, we were able to fully realize the vision we originally had.

What Makes This Game Special

I’ve always been a huge fan of JRPGs. So creating something that resonates with other fans of the genre – something that feels like it can stand alongside the games I grew up loving – that’s incredibly special.

You'll Love This If...

You’re a fan of classic RPGs and JRPGs like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy – you’ll love the storytelling and turn-based battles. And if you enjoy Zelda-style dungeon exploration and puzzle-solving, you’ll feel right at home too.

Inspiration / Influences

Dragonyhm draws from classic JRPGs and action-adventures like The Legend of Zelda. Grandia inspired real-time encounters, save shrines, and parts of the battle system. The damage portrait is a nod to Doomguy from Doom, while dungeon design and puzzles borrow from our favorite Zelda titles.

Favorite Feature

A few standout moments for me: the encounter with Balmosyr, Kris acquiring Gonszilfr, the dramatic return to the palace to face Rykard, and of course – the ending sequence.

    Modretro has yet another hit!

I can’t recommend this game enough, it has a triple A feel and it’s from an indie developer that started as a homebrew project for a dead system. The story is epic, you’ll want to talk to every npc. The combat is very inspired by Pokemon and world feels like an old school Zelda. It’s everything you want in an rpg on or off the GBC/Chromatic. Buy this game!!!!!

    Dragonhym RPG

I haven’t beaten the game just yet, but I haven’t been able to put it down. It brings me back to the old days of dragon warrior I, and the old Zelda oracle games. The turn based combat is exciting, and the way leveling up works is really interesting and a pleasant surprise. The story so far is intriguing and I’m excited to see where it goes.

A deep story with fun gameplay mechanics

Full disclosure, my first copy arrived with an issue where it wasn't saving. I contacted modretro and they immediately replaced it free of charge. A+ customer service.

The game is actually quite fun, while the battle display is simplistic the game mechanics, lore, and over world are deep. I really appreciate the length of this game as I'm pushing past 10 hours and approaching the halfway point of the game. I also know there is a new game+ mechanic and look forward to playing a second time through.

I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys the RPG/jrpg style of games

    Fun with Dragonyhm

This game has been a lovely way to reconnect with the childlike wonder of handheld gaming. The puzzles are challenging and the gameplay has some unexpectedly fun turns.

    A blast from the past

The sort of title that would be called a classic if it came out in 2000, but gets to be a hidden gem in the 2020's. Clever ideas, puzzles, and a sprinkle of world-building alongside a fun art style make it so this game is well worth the cost.

There are a few flaws, but nothing that holds the game back. You're often asked to translate the in-universe language, but it's quite detailed, so discerning the specifics in 8-bit can be quite tedious. The flavour the task adds to the game is great, but it's still tiring.

Combat isn't explained the best. The basic attack is essentially not worth using unless you're entirely out of resources later in the game, and you have to figure this out early on.

Levelling up isn't explained at all, but it's based on the last attack you used, or if you buffed the stat during combat. Want to level defense? Use a defense boosting item during the battle you leveled up in. Strength? Strength boost. Agility? Just kill with a physical attack. Mana? Just kill with a magic attack. You can level multiple stats in a single level, so don't go feeling like you're making progress just because your level is going up.

That may be a list of complaints, but they're so minor that I'd only bump things down to 4.5/5 (but Modretro only lets you do whole stars, so I'd rather round up). It's absolutely worth your time.
