How It Started
I’ve been interested in game development since I was young, but it was during the COVID pandemic – when I had more free time – that I really dove in. I decided to learn how to make Game Boy games and ended up self-publishing an adventure RPG called Dragonborne.
Other Games / Projects
Dragonborne, Dracula: Dark Reign, and more titles currently in the works!
Fun Fact
When I made Dragonborne, I was completely new to GB Studio – and honestly, I didn’t use any design or planning docs. I just scripted straight from my head into the engine. Whatever I thought of next made it into the game! That spontaneous process helped shape the foundation for what eventually became Dragonyhm. These days, things are much more structured – we now use detailed design docs and thorough planning for all current and future releases.
The Idea
Why I Made This Game
Dragonyhm is the game I always wanted Dragonborne to be. With more experience, better tools, and the amazing talent of Bumbiss on board, we were able to fully realize the vision we originally had.
What Makes This Game Special
I’ve always been a huge fan of JRPGs. So creating something that resonates with other fans of the genre – something that feels like it can stand alongside the games I grew up loving – that’s incredibly special.
You'll Love This If...
You’re a fan of classic RPGs and JRPGs like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy – you’ll love the storytelling and turn-based battles. And if you enjoy Zelda-style dungeon exploration and puzzle-solving, you’ll feel right at home too.
Inspiration / Influences
Dragonyhm draws from classic JRPGs and action-adventures like The Legend of Zelda. Grandia inspired real-time encounters, save shrines, and parts of the battle system. The damage portrait is a nod to Doomguy from Doom, while dungeon design and puzzles borrow from our favorite Zelda titles.
Favorite Feature
A few standout moments for me: the encounter with Balmosyr, Kris acquiring Gonszilfr, the dramatic return to the palace to face Rykard, and of course – the ending sequence.

Dragonyhm DX: A Retro JRPG Gem Worth Exploring
Dragonyhm DX is a fantastic JRPG that will thrill retro gaming fans, perfectly recapturing the charm and depth of the Game Boy Color era. As Kris, a young protagonist on a quest to find his father, your adventure through the kingdom of Arch End is steeped in classic nostalgia—from its pixel art in the style of Ken Sugimori to its Zelda-inspired opening narrative, every detail evokes fond memories of retro gaming.
The gameplay design is brilliantly crafted: it blends turn-based combat with real-time exploration. Enemies actively chase you, and skillful movement lets you avoid random encounters, adding a strategic layer to the experience. The unique leveling system is particularly clever—you must use items to boost specific stats the moment you level up, forcing players to carefully plan their character’s growth path.
The 9 main dungeons each have distinct features, ranging from challenging 密室 (secret rooms) to dragon lair seal quests. Paired with puzzles that require finding dragon scales to unlock progress, the 10+ hour gameplay is filled with exploration joy. The FRAM save technology ensures you never lose your progress, and the Golden Dragon mode unlocks high-difficulty content, boosting replay value significantly. For JRPG enthusiasts, this heartfelt title is an absolute must-play.

Dragonyhm is nothing short of a love letter to the golden age of JRPGs. From the moment I started playing, I felt like I was back in the world of Dragon Quest, which is my all-time favorite series. The turn-based battles are exactly what I enjoy, and the story kept me hooked from the very beginning.
What really impressed me was not just the game itself, but the whole package: the beautifully made cartridge, the sturdy box, the nostalgic manual, and even the little Chromatic Charm included to decorate my console. It’s clear that a lot of passion went into this release.
If you love classic JRPGs like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy, this is an absolute must-have. A true hidden treasure!

Dragonyhm is a love letter to the golden age of gaming, and it wears its nostalgic heart proudly on its sleeve. From the moment the game boots up, you’re greeted with visuals, music, and gameplay mechanics that immediately transport you back to the days of classic 8- and 16-bit adventures.
What makes Dragonyhm stand out is how faithfully it captures that retro spirit while still feeling fresh and fun in 2025. The pixel art is detailed and vibrant, the chiptune-inspired soundtrack sets the perfect mood, and the controls feel tight and responsive—exactly what you’d expect from the era it pays homage to. At the same time, there are just enough modern design touches to keep it from feeling outdated.
Exploration is rewarding, combat is simple yet satisfying, and the overall pacing balances challenge with accessibility. Longtime fans of retro RPGs and action-adventure titles will feel right at home, but newcomers can also jump in without frustration.
In short, Dragonyhm is more than just a nostalgia trip—it’s a genuinely fun and thoughtfully designed game. Modretro has created something that honors the past while delivering an enjoyable experience for today’s players. If you grew up on classic adventures or simply appreciate games with heart and charm, this is one you shouldn’t miss.
