How It Started

I’ve been interested in making games since playing around with tools like Klik & Play when I was younger, but it took a pandemic—and the free time of lockdown—to finally get started. The improvements in modern tooling helped make it possible, too.

Other Games / Projects

Aside from the original (non-DX) Tales of Monsterland, I’ve been working on my second game, a Game Boy open-world sci-fi RPG called Fall from Space, for the last three years.

Fun Fact

This might be common among other developers, but outside of actual development time, I really struggle to stop thinking about the game and its world. I often find myself recording ideas while in the shower, driving home, or trying to fall asleep!

The Idea

Why I Made This Game

It’s both a love letter to the kind of games I enjoyed playing on my original Game Boy, and a “what if” scenario – what if a game like Wonder Boy had come out on that platform?

It’s my first game, and making it has felt like revisiting memories and emotions from a particular time in my life.

    A wonderful homage to Wonderboy!

    First of all I have to say that I wasn't sure about ordering from Modretro. I live in the UK and expected I would have to wait a long time, possibly deal with customs etc. However, the game arrived really quickly with no fuss and in perfect condition!

    The game itself is really nice. The packaging is smaller than original GB titles but very cute and premium feeling. Instructions are a really nice addition and the cart feels nice and solid. Playing the game immediately brings back the nostalgia of Wonderboy, Alex Kidd and other similar titles and while I've not played all the way through it's also quite difficult later on. Overall I'm delighted with this and it's started a passion for collecting these games now.

    The Right Stuff

    The title feels like a call back to some Sega titles, but in short this is is a lovely little combat platformer with some slight RPG elements to it, and while the final boss is a little confusing, once you figure it out, they suddenly send you through even more crazy events. A fun little romp for several hours of play time. Going to be buying this one for the Nephews.

    Short and Cozy

    A bite-sized love letter to 8-bit platformers like Wonder Boy and Wario Land. The pixel art is gorgeous, the transformation mechanics keep exploration fun, and the chiptune soundtrack pops on the Chromatic screen. It's a short 2-hour ride with floaty jumps, but if you want a charming, modern retro adventure to clear in a single evening, it's worth picking up.

    Monsterland !

    Interesting levels and story development. Am nowhere near the end of the game and am enjoying my time so far. Some occasional graphical glitches - then again it’s really impressive what a single developer did on this game!
